THE FASTEST GROWING SOCIAL NETWORK

We're not going to be using Twitter just to keep up with friends or to set up social events. That would only really be feasible with s small handful of followers.

Serious Internet Marketers build lists of followers extending into many thousands, and you might well wonder how anyone could possibly keep up with all those messages as they stream in.

Since the sending of messages is often automated (as are the finding of people, the decisions to follow them and their decisions to follow back), you might think that no one actually reads any of it, and that there's little point in participating.

But that's not actually the way it works.

HOW TWITTER WORKS FOR THE WISE INTERNET MARKETER

Yes, you should send out regular tweets to establish your reputation as an entertaining tweeter and an expert in your field, and yes, you should include an intriguing invitation-to-view-your-website in your automated Welcoming Message - since that crucial message will appear in people's e-mail (for the same reason, you should personally reply to incoming Direct Messages).

However, your main activity on Twitter is not to broadcast advertising (no one wants that) but to enter into dialogues with other users. Find out what people want to know and build their trust by being helpful and knowledgeable. Use the insights you gain to write more posts and articles.

A dialogue might start from a tweet that you send out to all your followers, especially if you invite responses by asking a question. But your main way in is going to be by dropping in on a dialogue that's already underway (find it with search.twitter), joining the discussion and supplying a solution, just as you would in other social networks.

DO: customize your background, optimize your profile, retweet (it's flattering), use any excuse to enter into conversation, tweet to announce new articles or blog posts (that can all be done automatically),  Communicate helpfully and cheerfully and make yourself indispensable!
